SPECIALIST REPOINTING & BRICKWORK
ACROSS CHESTER

EXPERT MASONRY BUILT FOR
CHESTER'S BUILDINGS

Chester is unlike anywhere else in England. Its streets are lined with Roman foundations, Medieval sandstone walls, and some of the finest black-and-white timber-framed architecture in the country. Nestled among them are Victorian terraces and Edwardian villas that demand just as careful a hand.
Standard cement mortars have no place here. When applied to Chester’s soft red sandstone or its historic brick façades, they trap moisture, accelerate decay, and potentially, cause irreversible damage that no amount of repainting will fix.
At K Blythin Brick & Stonework Ltd, we’re a Chester-based family business with over 60 years of combined experience. We specialise in breathable lime mortars and traditional masonry techniques that work with your building’s fabric, not against it. Together, we’re keeping Chester’s architectural character intact for generations ahead.

HERITAGE IN ACTION

Tarporley Cottage Restoration

NEAR TARPORLEY, CHESTER

THE TARPORLEY COTTAGE RESTORATION

THE CHALLENGE:

A historic cottage suffering from “suffocating” modern cement repairs that were masking rising damp.

THE SOLUTION:

We stripped back the failing mortar and performed a full-scale repoint using a bespoke lime mix. We carefully sourced local Cheshire bricks to replace damaged sections, ensuring the new work was indistinguishable from the 19th-century original.

THE OUTCOME

A fully breathable, bone-dry home that regained its rustic charm.

CHESTER CITY CENTRE

THE TARPORLEY COTTAGE RESTORATION

THE CHALLENGE:

Structural weathering to a prominent sandstone archway, a victim of Chester’s high humidity and soft stone profile.

THE SOLUTION:

Precise sandstone repair using specialised heritage techniques. We stabilised the arch and repointed with a lime mortar specifically gauged to be softer than the historic sandstone.

THE OUTCOME

Structural integrity restored without compromising the delicate, weathered aesthetic of the stone.

Sandstone Arch Conservation
Abbey Square cobble relaying

ABBEY SQUARE, CHESTER CATHEDRAL PRECINCT

ABBEY SQUARE COURTYARD (CHESTER CATHEDRAL)

THE CHALLENGE:

Preserving the historic footpaths of one of Chester’s most photographed locations.

THE SOLUTION:

We relaid the traditional cobbles using time-honoured methods, ensuring the drainage and bedding layers were historically accurate and structurally sound for modern foot traffic.

THE OUTCOME

A seamless restoration of a high-profile heritage site, preserving the “Old Chester” feel of the Cathedral grounds.

PERIOD PROPERTY, CHESTER

THE CELLAR AND STEP RESTORATION

THE CHALLENGE:

A damp, unusable cellar and crumbling sandstone entrance steps.

THE SOLUTION:

We laid a new limestone floor in the cellar using lime mortar to allow moisture to regulate naturally, preventing “tanking” issues. Externally, we repaired the sandstone steps with tonal lime pointing.

THE OUTCOME

A dry, functional cellar and a grand, safe entrance that reflects the home’s Victorian heritage.

Period chimney rebuild

HERITAGE RESIDENTIAL, CHESTER

PERIOD CHIMNEY REBUILD

THE CHALLENGE:

A chimney stack at the end of its life, losing mortar and posing a risk to the roofline.

THE SOLUTION:

A methodical rebuild using reclaimed heritage bricks and high-durability lime mortar designed for high-exposure areas.

THE OUTCOME

A safe, weather-tight chimney that matches the property’s original architectural silhouette.

CARING FOR CHESTER'S SANDSTONE - SPECIALIST RESTORATION

Chester’s red sandstone is one of its most defining features, but also one of its most vulnerable. From the City Walls and the Cathedral to the boundary walls of Handbridge and the older properties of Hoole, this material is highly porous and particularly susceptible to erosion, salt crystallisation, and the damage caused by incompatible modern mortars.

OUR APPROACH TO SANDSTONE AND
HISTORIC MASONRY:

  • Compatible Lime Specifications: We use carefully formulated lime mortars matched to the softness and porosity of Chester’s local sandstone, ensuring the joint never becomes harder than the stone itself.
  • Breathable Repairs: Our lime-based solutions allow moisture to escape naturally, preventing the internal damp that cement repointing so often creates.
  • Erosion Control: We assess each face of a structure individually, targeting areas of active weathering before they become structural problems.

PRESERVING CHESTER'S
ARCHITECTURAL LEGACY

From the Georgian townhouses of King Street to the ornate Victorian villas of Curzon Park and the Arts & Crafts homes of Handbridge, Chester’s residential streets represent centuries of craftsmanship. These buildings deserve (and in many cases legally require!) a restoration approach that honours what was originally built.

SPECIALIST HERITAGE TECHNIQUES:

  • Chimney Rebuilds & Repairs: We restore high-exposure chimney stacks using reclaimed bricks and traditional lime mortar, ensuring a seamless match with the original structure.
  • Bespoke Lime Blends: Mixed on-site to match the specific aggregate, colour, and texture of your property’s original finish, so no off-the-shelf shortcuts.
  • Material Integrity: By sourcing reclaimed brick and locally appropriate sandstone, we ensure that repairs are historically sympathetic and visually invisible.
